12 Popcorn Flower Granny Square

This pretty 12-popcorn flower granny square pattern can be used to make many different projects. It is a 4 inch crochet square and looks great in just about any color combination.

What You Will Need

Yarn

  • We used a #3 Light (light worsted, DK, 8ply) yarn weight, with 12 WPI (wraps per inch) in the following colors:
  • Color A - amber
  • Color B - olive
  • Color C - white
  • Color D - brown

Hook

  • 5mm (H/5)
  • Note - You can use another yarn weight and use the hook size recommended on the yarn label.

  • Yarn Needle

Finished Size

  • This granny square measures about 4 inches (10 cm) wide, unblocked, using the yarn weight and hook size mentioned above.

Stitches and Abbreviations Used (US Terms)

  • ch - chain
  • hdc - half double crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • tr - treble stitch
  • col - color
  • 2st-hdc-cl - 2 stitch half double crochet cluster, see special stitches below
  • pc - popcorn stitch, see special stitches below
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • st/sts - stitch/stitches
  • sp/sps - space/spaces
  • rnd - round
  • rpt - repeat
  • [ ] - at the end of a round, indicates the number of stitches in that round

Special Stitches

  • 2st-hdc-cl - YO, insert hk into st, YO pull yarn through st (3 lps on hk), YO pull through 2 lps (2 lps on hk), YO insert hk into same st, YO pull yarn through st (4 lps on hk), YO pull through all lps on hk (1 lp on hk).
  • pc -  5dc in st, remove hk from the loop, insert hk into 1st dc made, pick up the lp of last dc, and draw through loop on hk.

Pattern Notes

  • The pattern starts with a 4 chain foundation ring but you can also start it with a magic ring.

Instructions

  • Foundation, col A - Ch4, sl st into 1st st to join.
  • Rnd 1 - Ch4 (counts as dc and ch1), * 1dc, ch1, rpt from * 10 more times, sl st into 3rd ch to join, cut yarn, fasten off. [12dc, 12 x ch-1 sps] 
  • Rnd 2, col B - Sl st col B into any ch-1 sp. 
    Ch2 and 1hdc in same sp (this counts as 2st-hdc-cl), ch2, * 2st-hdc-cl in next ch-1 sp, ch2, rpt from * 10 more times, sl st into top of 1st 2st-hdc-cl to join, cut yarn, fasten off. [12 x 2st-hdc-cl, and 12 x ch-2 sps]
  • Rnd 3, col C - Sl st col C into any ch-2 sp. 
    Ch3 (counts as 1st dc of 1st pc), pc in same sp as ch-3, ch2, * pc in next ch-2 sp, ch2, rpt from * 10 more times, sl st into back of 1st pc to join, cut yarn, fasten off. [12pc, 12 x ch-2 sps]
  • Rnd 4, col D - Sl st col D into any ch-2 sp.
    Ch4 (counts as tr), 2tr in same sp as ch-3, * ch1, (3dc, ch1) in next 2 ch-2 sps, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) in next ch-2 sp, rpt from * 2 more times, ch1, (3dc, ch1) in next 2 ch-2 sps, ch1, 3tr in same sp as ch-4, ch2, sl st into top of ch-4 to join, cut yarn, fasten off. [24tr, 24dc, 12 x ch-1 sps, 4 x ch-2 sps]
  • Finishing - Use a yarn needle to weave in the loose ends and if necessary block the squares to ensure that they are of an even size and shape to make joining easier.
