4 Inch Popcorn Flower Granny Square

In this step-by-step tutorial, we will show you how to make a simple popcorn flower granny square. This easy-to-make crochet square makes lovely blankets or pillow covers.

What You Will Need

Yarn

  • We used a #3 Light (light worsted, DK, 8ply) yarn weight, with 12 WPI (wraps per inch) in the following colors
  • Color A - amber
  • Color B - white
  • Color C - Blue

Hook

  • 5mm (H/5)

Finished Size

  • This is a medium-sized granny square that measures about 4 inches (10 cm) unblocked, using the yarn weight and hook size mentioned above.

Stitches and Abbreviations Used (US Terms)

  • ch - chain
  • hdc - half double crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • PC - popcorn stitch, see special stitches below
  • col - color
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • st/sts - stitch/stitches
  • sp/sps - space/spaces
  • rnd - round
  • rpt - repeat
  • [ ] - at the end of a round, indicates the number of stitches in that round

Special Stitches

  • pc - 5dc in st, remove hk from the loop, insert hk into 1st dc made, pick up the loop of last dc, and draw through loop on hk.

Pattern Notes

  • This pattern starts with a chain 4 foundation ring but you can also start with a magic ring.

Instructions

  • Foundation, col A - Ch4, sl st into 1st to make a ring.
  • Rnd 1 - Ch4 (counts as 1dc, and ch1), * 1dc, ch1, rpt from * 6 more times, sl st into 3rd ch to join, cut yarn, fasten off, weave in end. [8dc, 8 x ch-1 sps]
  • Rnd 2, col B - Sl st col B into any dc st, ch3 (this counts as 1st dc of pc), pc in same sp as ch-3, ch3, * sk ch-1 sp and pc in next st, ch3, rpt from * 6 more times, sl st into back of 1st pc to join, cut yarn, fasten off, weave in end. [8pc, 8 x ch-3 sps]
  • Rnd3, col C - Slst col C into any ch-3 sp, ch3(counts as dc), (2dc, ch2, 3dc) into same sp as ch-3, ch1, * 2hdc innext ch-3 sp, ch1, (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch-3 sp, ch1, rpt from 2more times, 2hdc into next ch-3 sp, ch1, sl st into 3rd ch to join.[24dc, 8 x hdc, 8 x ch-1 sps, 4 x ch-2 sps]
  • Rnd 4 - Sl st into next2-sts, sl st in 2sp, ch3(counts as dc), (2dc, ch2, 3dc) into same sp as ch-3, ch1, 3dc ineach of the next 2 ch-1 sps, * (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch1,(3dc,ch1)in each of the next 2 ch-1 sps, rpt from * 2 more times, ch1, sl stinto ch-3 to join, cut yarn, fasten off.   • Finishing - Use a yarn needle to weave in the loose ends and if necessary block the squares to ensure that they are of an even size and shape to make joining easier.
