What You Will Need

Yarn

  • We used a #3 Light (also known as light worsted, DK, or 8ply) yarn weight, with 12 WPI (wraps per inch) in the following colors:
  • Color A - cream
  • Color B - red
  • Color C - crimson
  • Color D - white

Hook

  • We used a 5mm (H/5) hook
  • Note - you can use another yarn weight and use the hook size recommended on the yarn label.

Notions

  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle

Finished Size

  • This is a medium-sized granny square that measures about 4.75 inches (12 cm) wide, unblocked, using the yarn weight and hook size mentioned above.

  • The foundation on this square is made with a chain 4 ring, however, the foundation can also be started with a magic ring.

Instructions

  • Foundation, color A - Ch4, sl st in 1st ch to join.
  • Rnd 1 - Ch2 (counts as dc), 11dc in ring, sl st into ch-2 to join, cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends. [12dc]
  • Rnd 2, color B - Sl st yarn into any sp btw the sts of prev rnd. Ch2 (counts as dc), 1dc in same sp as ch-2, 2dc in each sp btw sts, sl st into top of ch-2 to join, cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends. [24dc]
  • Rnd 3, color C- Sl st yarn into any sp btw 2-dc of prev rnd. Ch2 (counts as dc), 2dc in same sp as ch-2, *sk 2-dc, 3dc in next sp, repeat from * 10 more times, sl st into top of ch-2 to join, cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends. [36dc]
  • Rnd 4, color D - Sl st into any sp btw 2-dc sts of prv rnd. Ch2 (counts as dc), 2dc in the same sp as ch-2, 3hdc into next 2 sps, * (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next sp, 3hdc in next 2 sps, rpt from * 2 more times, 3dc in same sp as ch-3, then 1hdc in top of ch-2 to join. [24dc, 24hdc, 4 x ch-2 sps]
  • Rnd 5 - Ch2 (counts as dc), 2dc in the same sp as ch-2, 3dc into next 3 sps, * (3dc, ch2, 3dc) in the ch-2 sp, 3dc in next 3 sps, rpt from * 2 more times, 3dc in same sp as ch-3, ch2, sl stitch into ch-2 to join cut yarn, fasten off, weave in ends. [60dc, 4 x ch-2 sps]
  • Finishing - Use a yarn needle to weave in the loose ends, and if necessary block the squares to ensure that they are of even size and shape to make joining easier.
