What You Will Need

Yarn

  • We used #3 light worsted weight yarn (also known as DK or 8py) with 12 WPI (wraps per inch) in the following colors:
  • Santa
  • White - 28.5 yards (26 meters)
  • Sand (flesh color) - 8 yards (7.3 meters)
  • Red - 13.1 yards (12 meters)
  • Snowman
  • Dark blue - 6.4 yards (5.85 meters)
  • White - 29.4 yards (26.9 meters)
  • Orange - 0.6 yards (0.55 meters)
  • Red - 13.1 yards (12 meters)
  • Grinch
  • Green - 16.5 yards (15.1 meters)
  • White - 19.9 yards (18.2 meters)
  • Red - 13.1 yards (12 meters)
  • Elf
  • Sand (flesh color) - 16.5 yards (15.1 meters)
  • White - 19.9 yards (18.2 meters)
  • Red - 6.6 yards (6 meters)
  • Green - 6.6 yards (6 meters)

Hook

  • 4mm (G/6) crochet hook or size to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions

  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

  • 2 x 10mm glue on eyes per gift card holder
  • Hot glue gun or fabric glue
  • Blush powder (optional for snowman and elf gift card holder)
  • 15 inch (38cm) long ribbon, 0.2 inch (0.5cm) wide, for each card holder.

Gauge

  • The size of the finished bag, which is 3 inches (7.6cm) wide and 5 inches (12.7cm) tall, determines the gauge for this pattern.

Special Stitches

  • pc(1) - 5dc in st, remove hk from the loop, insert hk into 1st dc made, pick up the loop of last dc, and draw through loop on hk.
  • pc(2) -  same as pc(1) but made with 4dc instead of 5dc.
  • picot - ch3, insert hk into 3rd ch from hk, YO pull the yarn back through both the stitch and the loop on the hk.

Pattern Notes

  • Use a stitch marker to make the first stitch of each round.

Instructions

Santa Gift Card Holder

  • Rnd 1, white - Ch14, 2hdc in 2nd ch from hk, 1hdc in next 11-sts, 2hdc in last st, continue on the other side of the foundation chain, 1hdc in next 11-sts, sl st into 1st hdc to join. [26hdc]
  • Rnds 2-3 - Ch2 (not counted as a st), 1hdc in same sp as ch-2, 1hdc in next 25-sts, sl st in top of 1st st to join. [26hdc]
  • Rnd 4 - Ch2 (not counted as a st), 1hdc in same sp as ch-2, 1hdc in next 25-sts, sl st in top of 1st st to join, cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in the ends. [26hdc]
  • Note: Start your first stitch in round 5 so that after making 7 stitches the 8th stitch is in the center of the row - this is the position for the nose.
    Rnd 5, sand (flesh color) - Slip knot yarn to hook and slip stitch into any side stitch.
    Ch1 (not counted as a st), sc in same sp as ch-1, 1sc in next 6-sts, pc(1) in next, 1sc in next 18-sts, sl st in top of 1st st to join. [25hdc, 1pc]
  • Rnds 6-8 - Ch1 (not counted as a st), 1sc in same sp as ch-1, 1sc in next 25 sts, sl st into 1st st to join. [26sc in each rnd]
  • Rnd 9 - Ch1 (not counted as a st), 1sc in same sp as ch-1, then make 1sc next 25-sts, sl st into 1st st to join, cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in end. [26sc]
  • Rnd 10, white - Slip knot yarn to hk, then sl st yarn into the last st made in round 9. 
    Ch2 (counts as 1st st of pc(2)), pc(2) in same sp as ch-2, ch1, * sk 1-st, pc(2) in next, ch1, rpt from * 11 more times, sl st into 1st pc(2)-st to join, cut yarn, fasten off and weave in end. [13 x pc(2) and 13 x ch-1 sps]
  • Rnds 11, red - Sl knot yarn to hk and sl st into a ch-1 sp.
    Ch2 (not counted as a st), 1dc in the same sp as ch-2, 1dc in pc(2) of prev rnd, continue to make 1dc st in each pc(2) and ch-1 sp, sl st into st to join. [26dc]
  • Rnds 12-13 - Ch2 (not counted as a st), 1dc in same sp as ch-2, 1dc in next 25 sts, sl st into 1st st to join. [26dc]
  • Rnds 14 - Ch2 (not counted as a st), 1dc in same sp as ch-2, 1dc in next 25 sts, sl st into 1st st to join, cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in end. [26dc]
  • Ch2 (not counted as a st), (1dc, picot) in same st as ch-2, * (1dc, picot) in next st, rpt from * 24 more times, sl st in top of 1st st to join, cut yarn, ch1, fasten off, and weave in end. [26dc and 26 x picot sts]
  • Finish - Glue on eyes, then thread the ribbon onto a tapestry needle and weave it between the double crochet stitches of round 14 to make the drawstring pull.

Variations

  • Use the above Santa crochet gift card holder pattern to make a Grinch, Snowman, or Elf by using different colored yarn.

Snowman gift card holder

  • - Blue - rounds 1-3
    - White - rounds 4-10 (use orange yarn to make the puff stitch nose in round 5)
    - Red - rounds 11-14
    - White - round 15
    - Glue on eyes and brush on rosy cheeks with blush powder.

Grinch card holder

  • - Green - rounds 1-9
    - White - round 10
    - Glue on eyes and embroider on the mouth and eyebrows using black yarn.
    - Red - rounds 11-14
    - White - round 15

Elf crochet card holder

  • - Sand (flesh color yarn) - rounds 1-9
    - White - round 10
    - Glue on eyes and embroider on the mouth using black yarn.
    - Green - round 11
    - Red - round 12
