What You Will Need

Yarn

  • #3 Light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) yarn, with 14 WPI (wraps per inch)
  • Color A (center) dark brown - about 4.4 yards (4 meters)
  • Color B (petals) yellow - about 8.9 yards (8.1 meters)
  • Color C (background) green - about 10.5 yards (9.6 meters)
  • Color D (border) white - about 11 yards (10 meters)

Hook

  • 3.5mm (E/4) hook or size to obtain a gauge.

  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle

Gauge

  • Use the finished size of the granny square as the gauge.

Finished Size

  • The size of this granny square is about 4.7 inches (12cm) across and about 6.3 inches (16cm) from corner to corner.

Instructions

  • Foundation, color A - MR, or ch6, sl st into 1st ch to join.
  • Round 1 - Ch2 (not counted as a stitch), 12 dc in ring, sl st into top of 1st dc to join. [12dc]
  • Round 2 - Ch2 (not a st), 2dc in each of the 12 sts, sl st into top of 1st dc to join, ch1, cut yarn and fasten off. [24dc]
  • Round 3, color B - Sl knot yarn to hk, sl st into any st.
    Ch2, in same st make 1dc, 2tr, picot, 2tr, 2dc, sk 1-st, 1sc in next, *in next st (sc, ch2, 1dc, 2tr, picot, 2tr, 2dc), sk 1-st, 1sc in next st, rpt from * sl st into the base of the 1st ch-2 made. [8 petals]
  • Round 4 - Ch4 (runs at the back of petals), sl st into sc between next petal, ch4, * sl st in next sc, ch4, rpt from * 6 more times, sl st into base of 1st ch-4, ch1 cut yarn, fasten off. [8 x ch-4 sps]
  • Round 5 color C - With the right side facing you. Slip knot yarn to hk, sl st into any ch-4 sp.
    Into ch-4 sp, (ch2 (counts as dc), 2dc, ch2, 3 dc), in the next sp make (3hdc), * in next sp make (3dc, ch2, 3dc), then make (3hdc) in next sp, rpt from * 2 more times, sl st in top of ch3, to join. [36dc]
  • Round 6 - Sl st into the next 2-sts, sl st into ch-2sp.

  • Round 7, color D - Slip knot yarn to hk, sl st into any ch-2 corner sp.
