What You Will Need

Yarn

  • We used #3 light (also known as light worsted, DK, or 8ply) acrylic yarn with 12 WPI (wraps per inch). For each watermelon coaster you will need:
  • Color A, red - 7.10 yards (6.5 meters)
  • Color B, watermelon - 4.9 yards (4.5 meters)
  • Color C, light pink or white - 3.5 yards (3.2 meters)
  • Color D, lime - 3.7 yards (3.4 meters)
  • Color E, dark green - 4.9 yards (4.5 meters)
  • Black - 0.8 yards (0.7 meters)

Hook

  • 3mm (D/3)

Notions

  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle

Gauge

  • While the gauge is not crucial for this project, if you want your coasters to match ours in size, aim for approximately 1.8 inches (3 cm) in diameter for rounds 1-3.

Finished Size

  • The finished size of this coaster is about 4 and ¼ inches (11cm) when with the yarn and hook size mentioned above.

Stitches and Abbreviations Used (US Terms)

  • MR – magic ring
  • ch - chain stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • RSC - reverse single crochet (see special stitches below)
  • st/sts – stitch/stitches
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • col - color
  • hk - hook
  • YO - yarn over
  • rnd – round
  • rpt – repeat
  • [ ] - at the end of a round, indicates the number of stitches in that round

Special Stitches

  • RSC -  Insert hk from front to back of next st to the right of the hk, YO pull yarn through st, YO pull yarn though both loops on hk.

Pattern Notes

  • Don't turn your work after finishing each round.
  • To keep track of where each round starts, use a stitch marker. Put it on the first single crochet of each round and move it up as you progress.

Instructions

  • Rnd 1, col A - 6sc, in magic ring, pull yarn tail to tighten the circle. [6sc]
  • Rnd 2 - 2sc in each of the next 6-sts. [12sc]
  • Rnd 3 - * 1sc in next st, 2sc in next, rpt from *6 times. [18sc]
  • Rnd 4 - * 1sc in next 2-sts, 2sc in next, rpt from *6 times. [24sc]
  • Rnd 5 - * 1sc in next 3-sts, 2sc in next, rpt from *6 times. [30sc]
  • Rnd 6 - * 1sc in next 4-sts, 2sc in next, rpt from *6 times, cut yarn, leaving a short tail. [36sc]
  • Rnd 7, color B - Sl st into next st, ch1 (not counted as a st), * 1sc in next 5-sts, 2sc in next, rpt from *6 times. [42sc]
  • Rnd 8 - Ch1 (not counted as a st), * 1sc in next 6-sts, 2sc in next, rpt from *6 times, cut yarn, leaving a short tail for weaving in later. [48sc]
  • Rnd 9, color C - Sl st into next st, ch1 (not counted as a st), * 1sc in next 7-sts, 2sc in next, rpt from *6 times, cut yarn, leaving a short tail for weaving in later. [54sc]
  • Rnd 10, color D - Sl st into next st, ch1, * 1sc in next 8-sts, 2sc in next, rpt from *6 times, cut yarn, leaving a short tail for weaving in later. [60sc]
  • Rnd 11, color E - Sl st into next st, ch1, RSC in next 60-sts, sl st into base of 1st RSC to join, cut yarn, fasten off. [61RSC]
  • Finish
    - Use a yarn needle to weave in the tail ends. 
    - With black yarn, embroider a few short stitches for seeds around the center of the coaster.
