What You Will Need

Yarn

  • #3 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% Acrylic yarn, or similar yarn.
  • Witch Stocking Treat Bag
  • Black, about 17.5 yards (16 meters)
  • Orange, about 63.4 yards (58 meters)
  • Purple, about 63.4 yards (58 meters)
  • Grey, about 2.2 yards (2 meters)
  • Witch Hat Applique
  • Hat - about 9.3 yards (5.6 meters) of green yarn
  • Hat band - about 0.76 yards (0.7 meters) of black yarn
  • Hat buckle - a small amount of yellow yarn

Hook

  • 5mm crochet hook for bag
  • 4mm hook for witch hat applique

  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle

Finished Size

  • The bag is about 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide by 8 inches (20.3 cm)tall and about 10 inches (25.4 cm) tall with the handles.

Pattern Notes

  • You can use #3 light or #4 worsted weight yarn for any of these bags. 
  • When using #4 worsted yarn, the bags will work up slightly larger and will require a little extra yarn and a larger hook size.

Instructions

Witch Stocking Treat Bag

  • Foundation, black - Ch31
  • Round 1 - Sc in 2nd ch from hk and sc in each ch across, make 2sc in the last st, sc in each ch on the other side, ending with 2sc in the last st, sl st into 1st sc to join. [62]
  • Round 2 - Ch1 (not counted as a st), sc in the same st as ch-1, then sc in each st around, sl st into 1st st to join. [62sc]
  • Please note: the stitches in rows 3 to 34 are the same as row 2, but the colors change as listed below.
  • Rounds 3 & 4 = black
  • Rounds 5 - 8 (4 rounds) = orange
  • Rounds 9 -12 (4 rounds) = purple
  • Rounds 13 - 16 (4 rounds) = orange
  • Rounds 17 - 20 (4 rounds) = purple
  • Rounds 21 - 24 (4 rounds) = orange
  • Rounds 25 - 28 (4 rounds) = purple
  • Rounds 29 - 32  (4 rounds) = orange
  • Rounds 33 & 34 (2 rounds) = purple

  • Round 35, purple - Slip knot yarn to hk and sl st into a st on a side seam.
    Ch1 (not counted as a st) 1sc in the same st as ch-1, then sc into the next 7-sts, ch25, sk 15-sts, and sc into each of the next 16-sts, ch25, sk 15-sts, sc into each of the next 8-sts, sl st into the 1st sc to join. [66 stitches]
  • Round 36 - Ch1 (not counted as a st) sc in the same st as ch-1, sc in each st around (including the handles), sl st into the 1st sc to join, ch1, cut yarn, and fasten off. [66sc]

Witch Hat Applique - Make as many as desired

  • Row 1 (green yarn) - ch2, 2sc in 1st ch, turn. [2sc]
  • Row 2 - ch1 (not a st), 2sc in same sp as ch1, 2sc in last st, turn. [4sc]
  • Row 3 - ch1 (not a st), sc in each st, turn. [4sc] 
  • Row 4 - ch1 (not a st), 2sc in same sp as ch1, sc in next 2-sts, 2sc in last st, turn. [6sc]
  • Row 5 - ch1 (not a st), sc in each st, turn. [6sc]
  • Row 6 - ch1 (not a st), 2 sc in same sp as ch1, sc in next 4-sts, 2sc in last st, turn. [8sc]
  • Row 7 - ch1 (not a st), sc each st, turn. [8sc] 
  • Row 8 - ch1 (not a st), 2sc in same sp as ch1, sc in next 6-sts, 2sc in last st, turn. [10sc] 
  • Rows 9 - 10 - ch1 (not a st), sc in each stitch, turn. [10sc]
  • Row 11, hat band (black yarn) - ch1 (not a st), 2sc in same sp as ch1, sc in next 8-sts, 2sc in last st, turn. [12sc] 
  • Row 12, brim (green yarn) - Ch1 (not a st), sc in each st, turn. [12sc] 
  • Row 13 - ch3, 3dc in same sp as ch-3, hdc in next 10- sts, 4dc in last st, sl st into last st, cut yarn and fasten off

Finish

  • Use a yarn needle to weave in the loose ends of the bag and the witch hat.
    Position the witch hat/s onto the bag and sew it into place.
