The gauge is not that important, but if you would like bags that are a similar size to the ones shown here it should be about:
16 single crochets by 19 rows = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm) using a 5 mm hook and #3 DK yarn.

The bag is about 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide by 8 inches (20.3 cm) tall and about 10 inches (25.4 cm) tall with the handles.

You can use #3 light or #4 worsted weight yarn for the bag.
When using #4 worsted yarn, the bag will work up slightly larger and will require a little extra yarn and a larger hook size.

Foundation, white - Ch31
Round 1 - Sc in 2nd ch from hk and sc in each ch across, make 2sc in the last st, sc in each ch on the other side, ending with 2sc in the last st, sl st into 1st sc to join. [62]
Round 2 - Ch1 (not counted as a st), sc in the same st as ch-1, then sc in each st around, sl st into 1st st to join. [62sc]
Please note: the stitches in rows 3 to 35 are the same as row 2, but the colors change as listed below.
Round 3 = white
Round 4 (1 round) = black
Round 5 - 8 (4 rounds)= white
Round 9 (1 round) = black
Round 10 - 13 (4 rounds)= white
Round 14 (1 round) = black
Round 15 - 18 (4 rounds) = white
Round 19 - 25 (7 rounds)= black
Round 26 - 29 (4 rounds)= white
Round 30 (1 round)= black
Round 31 - 34 (4 rounds)= white
Round 35 (1 round)= black, chain 1, cut yarn, and fasten off.

Lay the bag flat to determine the side seams.
Round 36, white - Slip knot yarn to hk and sl st into a st on a side seam.
Ch1 (not counted as a st) 1sc in the same st as ch-1, then sc into the next 7-sts, ch25, sk 15-sts, and sc into each of the next 16-sts, ch25, sk 15-sts, sc into each of the next 8-sts, sl st into the 1st sc to join. [66 stitches]
Round 37 - Ch1 (not counted as a st) sc in the same st as ch-1, sc in each st around (including the handles), sl st into the 1st sc to join, ch1, cut yarn, and fasten off. [66sc]

Foundation, black - MR, or ch3, sl st into 1st ch to join.
Round 1 - Ch1 (not counted as a st), 8sc in the ring, (for MR, pull tight), sl st into 1st sc to join, cut yarn and fasten off. [8sc]
Round 2, eye iris (color of choice) - Ch1 (not counted as a st) 2sc in same sp as ch-1, then 2sc in each st around, sl st into 1st sc to join, cut yarn and fasten off. [16sc]
Round 3, white - In this round leave a 7-inch (18 cm) starting tail this will be used for sewing the "sparkle" in the eye. Leave a 14-inch (36cm) long tail to use for sewing onto your project.Ch1 (not counted as a st), 1sc in the same sp as ch-1, 2sc in the next st, *1 sc in the next st, and 2sc in the next, rpt from * 6 more times, sl st into 1st sc to join, cut yarn and fasten off. [24 single crochets in this round]

Use a yarn needle to weave in the loose ends of the bag and the black and red yarn on the eyes.
Then thread the white starting yarn tail on the eyes onto the needle and stitch two short lines close together on the eyes, secure the yarn, and trim away excess.
Then position the eyes on the large black crocheted band on the bag and use the remaining white yarn tail to secure the eye onto your chosen project.
