Why Crochet Dishcloths

Crocheting dishcloths and washcloths are quick and easy and are a great way to improve your crocheting skills if you are learning to crochet or want to practice a new crochet stitch.

Not only that after you have finished with your practice swatch, you end up with something practical and useful too.

These crocheted dishcloths you can keep yourself or give these as thoughtful gifts for Mother's Day, Christmas, or as housewarming gifts.

What Is The Best Yarn For Making Dishcloths?

When it comes to crocheting dishcloths or washcloths, the best yarn is usually cotton. There are a few reasons for this:

  1. Absorbency -: Cotton is highly absorbent, making it perfect for soaking up water or any liquid spills. It also dries relatively quickly.
  2. Durability - Cotton is strong and durable, allowing the dishcloth to withstand regular use, washing, and drying.
  3. Stitch definition - Cotton yarn tends to show stitches clearly, which can be nice if you're using a pattern with intricate stitch work.
  4. Washability - Cotton can be machine washed and dried, a practical necessity for a dishcloth.

Some popular cotton yarns used for dishcloths include:

  • Dishie - A worsted-weight, 100% cotton yarn, that comes in a wide range of colors, which is great if you want to match your kitchen decor or make a set of dishcloths in coordinating colors.
  • Lily Sugar'n Cream - This is a well-known and widely available 100% cotton yarn, available in a variety of colors.
  • Bernat Handicrafter Cotton - Similar to Lily Sugar'n Cream, this yarn is 100% cotton and comes in a large range of colors.
  • Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton - A slightly finer yarn, this one is mercerized. Mercerization is a treatment that makes the yarn shinier, stronger, and more resistant to mildew.
  • Peaches & Creme - Another great option for 100% cotton yarn, available in both solids and ombres.

What Is The Best Yarn Weight For Making Dishcloths

The best yarn weight for making crochet dishcloths is usually a worsted weight yarn, which is also referred to as medium or number 4 weight, or 10 ply.

Worsted cotton yarn is ideal because it is thick enough to be durable and absorbent, but not so thick that it becomes cumbersome to work with.

However, even though worsted weight is a popular choice, you can crochet dishcloths in other weights of yarn, depending on your preference for thickness and texture.

You could also use a lighter weight yarn, like DK (double knitting, or 3, or 8py), or a heavier weight like bulky (5) depending on your preference and the specific pattern you're using.

Lighter-weight yarns are slightly thinner than worsted but the cloths are durable and easy to clean with.

The heavier weights create a thicker, more textured dishcloth but can become quite thick and cumbersome to use.

Remember, the yarn weight you use will also affect the hook size you should use and the final size of your dishcloth.

So, if you're following a pattern, keep in mind that using a different weight of yarn than the pattern suggests could result in a smaller or larger dishcloth.

Best Crochet Stitches For Dishcloths

For beginners, the best crochet dishcloth patterns are ones that you can easily make with simple stitches like half double crochet, double crochet, and single crochet.

Once you have mastered these stitches you can try using combinations of these basic crochet stitches like the moss stitch, lemon peel stitch, or Suzette stitch.

As your skills grow, move on to more advanced stitches.
