Suzette Stitch Explained

The crochet Suzette stitch is a textured stitch pattern that creates a fabric with a raised, bumpy appearance.

It is made by alternating single crochet (sc) stitches and double crochet (dc) stitches that worked in the same stitch or space.

Here's a breakdown of how the Suzette stitch is typically worked:

  1. Start with a foundation chain of the desired length for your project.
  2. Begin the first row by working single crochet and double crochet stitch in the second chain from the hook.
  3. Skip the next chain and work a single crochet and double crochet stitch in the next chain.
  4. Continue making a single crochet and double crochet stitch in every second chain space, until you reach the end of the row ending with a single crochet and double crochet in the last chain space.
  5. When you reach the end of the row, turn your work.
  6. For the next row, make a chain one, then work a single crochet and double crochet stitch into the first single crochet stitch from the previous row.
  7. Then repeat this pattern of making a single crochet and double crochet in the next single crochet space, working to the end of the row.
  8. Repeat numbers 6 - 7 for as many rows as required to reach your desired length to form the Suzette stitch pattern.

Remember, the stitch tension and yarn choice can affect the final look of the Suzette stitch. It's always a good idea to practice on a swatch to ensure you achieve the desired texture before starting your project.

Crochet Stitches

As mentioned above you will need to know how to chain stitch, single crochet and double crochet if you are not familiar with these stitches, you can learn more about them as follows.

Chain Stich (ch)

  1. Make a slip knot.
  2. Yarn over hook (YO)
  3. Draw a loop of yarn back up through the loop on the crochet hook. One chain stitch has been made.
  4. Yarn over hook (YO) and draw a loop through the loop on the hook to create another chain, and repeat to create new chain stitches.
  5. See how to start a crochet chain stitch with detailed step-by-step instructions.

Single Crochet (sc)

  1. Yarn over hook (YO), insert hook from the front to the back of a stitch.
  2. Yarn over hook (YO) and pull back up through the stitch. You should have two loops on the hook.
  3. Yarn over the hook (YO) and pull the yarn back through all the loops on the hook.
  4. This completes a single crochet stitch.
  5. See how to single crochet with detailed step-by-step instructions.

Double Crochet Stitch (dc)

  1. Yarn over hook (YO), insert the hook from the front to the back of a stitch.
  2. Yarn over hook (YO) again and pull back up through the stitch. You will have three loops on the hook.
  3. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through two loops on the hook. You will now have two loops on the hook.
  4. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through the two loops on the hook.
  5. This completes a double crochet stitch.
