Back Loop / Back Loop Only (BL or BLO)

  • When you normally crochet you tend to look at the side of the work. To identify the back loop, look at the row from the top.
  • Each of the stitches will look like a "V" laying down with its point, pointing to the left and away from the hook if you are a right-hand crocheter.
  • The loop of the "V" that is at the back of the work is referred to as the back loop.
  • This single back loop is the part of the stitch you need to crochet into whenever a pattern asks you to crochet into the back loop only (BL or BLO).

Double crochet 2 together cluster (dc2 cluster)

A double crochet 2 cluster is made by working two double crochets in the same space and completed as one stitch. This means that it does not change the stitch count.

  1. Yarn over hook (YO), insert hook into a stitch, yarn over the hook (YO), and pull the yarn through the stitch. You should have three loops on your hook.
  2. Yarn over the hook (YO) and pull the yarn through the first two loops on the hook. You should now have two loops on the hook.

Double crochet 3 cluster (dc3 cluster)

A double crochet 3 cluster is made by working three double crochets in the same space and completed as one stitch.

  3. Yarn over the hook (YO), insert hook into the same stitch, then yarn over the hook (YO), and pull the yarn through the stitch. You should now have four loops on the hook.

Finishing

Crochet sunflower coaster - To make the coasters lay flat after finishing them off after weaving in the ends, hold down with one hand on a flat surface and gently pull each petal out with the other.

You might also like to block your coasters to even out the stitches and enhance the final appearance. Blocking involves gently wetting or steaming the coaster and shaping it to the desired dimensions.

Crochet basket - Use a yarn needle to weave in the loose ends.

Color Variations

Here are some color variations you can consider for crochet sunflowers:

  1. Classic sunflower - Use yellow yarn for the petals, and brown for the center.
  2. Vibrant sunflower - Experiment with bright and bold colors like orange, red, or purple for the petals, and a contrasting color like teal or turquoise for the center.
  3. Pastel sunflower - Opt for soft and delicate shades such as pastel pink, lavender, or mint green for the petals, and a light brown or cream color for the center.
  4. Monochromatic sunflower - Choose different shades of a single color, such as various yellows for both the petals and the center, to create a cohesive and monochromatic look.
  5. Ombre sunflower - Use yarn in shades that transition from light to dark, creating a gradient effect. For example, start with a pale yellow for the inner petals and gradually transition to a deep golden yellow for the outer petals.
  6. Autumn sunflower - Embrace the colors of fall by using warm tones like deep oranges, and rust browns for the center of the petals.
  7. Sunset sunflower -  Capture the hues of a sunset by using a combination of warm colors like deep red, burnt orange, and golden yellow for the petals, and a dark brown or burgundy for the center.
  8. Tropical sunflower - Go for a tropical vibe with vibrant colors such as hot pink, electric blue, or sunny yellow for the petals, and a contrasting color like lime green or turquoise for the center.

Remember, these are just suggestions to spark your creativity. Feel free to mix and match colors, try out different combinations, or even add unique touches like variegated yarn to make your crochet sunflower coaster truly one-of-a-kind.

Thank you for the pattern! Very cute! I didn't have any of the yarn listed so I used a Medium 4 and an H hook (5). Also, "Color B" needs to be added to Round 3 of the Sunflower coaster. I had to frog that row when I realized I should have changed colors. Also, Round 7 of the basket sides does not include that it's to be in the back loop only on the printed version.

I’ve tried making the coaster basket several times and it keeps wanting to curl up after the second round of 36 dc and again after the second round of 54 dc. Is this an error? In your photos the coaster bottom lies flat and the 3 times I’ve attempted this pattern it’s not working right for me.

      Thanks for reaching out.

I’m sorry to hear you’re having issues with the sunflower coaster with basket pattern.

I have just tested the basket pattern out, using the same yarn and hook size as stated on the blog.

There is a slight curve to the bottom of the basket after making round 5, but it should flatten out after making the half double crochet stitches in round 6.

When you get to round 7, this is the start of the basket sides. Because there is no increase in the number of stitches in this round (and the remaining rounds) these rows will naturally curve up to form the sides.

Some things you might like to consider which could help you solve your problem:
      • Everyone crochets differently, you may like to try and adjust your tension when you crochet. If you loosen your crochet tension, this would create a looser stitch, which may stop the curling.
      • Yarn weights can vary and this could also contribute to the curving, perhaps go up from a 3.75mm hook to a 4mm hook.

      I hope this helps!

Hi Harriet, I am glad I just found your site. I am about to turn 75 & have been crocheting all my life. It is so refreshing to find a site that caters to beginners with a willingness to decipher complicated stitches, A great referral for my grandchildren,

Yes, you can sell what ever you make from my patterns, but not the actual patterns itself.

What brand of yarn is this, and/or where can I get it? I like these specific shades of gold and brown.

Thanks so much! The yarn I used is a #2 fine weight yarn. It's a mix of 100% cotton and a cotton-acrylic blend. I picked it up locally in Australia, and the brand is 4 Seasons. The specific yarn is called Brighton the shade mustard and Flinders in the shade Turmeric. Hope that helps!

I LOVE this pattern! Do you by any chance have a pattern for sunflower leaves about the same size? I'm using these flowers for the edging of a blanket and would love to include green leaves 💚🍃
