A puff stitch is several loops pulled up in one stitch. The number of loops for a puff stitch can vary, patterns will have puffs made with as few as four loops or ten or more.
- Yarn over hook (YO) and insert the hook into a stitch.
- Yarn over the hook (YO), and pull the yarn back up through the stitch. You will have three loops on the hook.
- Yarn over the hook (YO), and insert hook back into the same stitch, yarn over hook (YO), and pull yarn through the stitch., You will have five loops on the hook.
- Yarn over the hook (YO), and insert hook back into the same stitch, yarn over hook (YO), and pull yarn through the stitch. You will have seven loops on the hook.
- Yarn over the hook (YO), and insert hook back into the same stitch, yarn over hook (YO), and pull yarn through the stitch. You will have nine loops on the hook.
- Yarn over the hook (YO), and pull through seven loops,

Foundation - Chain an odd number of stitches.
Row One

Row 1 - Make 1 single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook, then make 1 single crochet in each stitch to the end, turn. The stitch count for this row and all rows will be an even number of stitches, one less than what you started with in the foundation chain.
Abbreviated version
Row 1 - 1sc in 2nd ch from hk, 1sc in each st to end, turn. [The stitch count for this row and all other rows will be 1 stitch less than your foundation chain]
Rows Two - Three

Rows 2-3 - 1 single crochet in the first stitch, back loop single crochet in each stitch until one stitch remains, single crochet in the last stitch, turn.

Rows 2-3 - 1sc in the 1st st, BLsc in each st until 1-st remains, 1sc in last st, turn.

Row Four

Row 4 - Chain 2, * skip 1 stitch, make a half double crochet in the next, then make a half double crochet in the skipped stitch, repeat from * until you have one stitch remaining, make a half double crochet in the last stitch, turn.
