A double crochet stitch is a basic crochet stitch that makes a tall and open fabric.

To do it, yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over again, pull up a loop, yarn over once more, and then pull through two loops on the hook.

Finally, yarn over again and pull through the remaining two loops. It creates a slightly taller stitch compared to a single crochet.

Double Crochet Stitch - Step-by-Step

Step One

One loop on a crochet hook and yarn over the hook.

Yarn over (wrap the yarn over the crochet hook from back to front).

Step Two

A crochet inserted into a stitch.

Insert the crochet hook into the desired stitch or space in the previous row.

Step Three

Three loops and a yarn over on a crochet hook.

Yarn over again and pull up a loop through the stitch or space you inserted the hook into. You now have three loops on the hook.

Step Four

Two loops and a yarn over on a crochet hook.

Yarn over again and pull through the first two loops on the hook. Now, you have two loops left on the hook.

Step Five

One loop on a crochet hook.

Yarn over one more time and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook. This completes the double crochet stitch.

Repeat

Repeat steps 1-5 for each double crochet stitch across the row.
