  • col - color
  • dc - double crochet

  • hk - hook

Flower Head

Foundation, col A, 3.5 mm hk - ch4, 1dc in 4th ch from hk, *ch3, 1dc into the 2 lps just below the ch-3 (the tops of the prvs 2-sts), rpt from * 5 times. [You should have a foundation made up of 6 spaces]

Rnd 1, note the stitches are worked around the posts of the dc-sts made in the last rnd - ch2 (count as 1dc), *(1dc into sp, ch3, sl st into 3rd ch from hk) rpt 4 times into the sp, rpt from * into each of the remaining 5-sps, 1dc into the last st, ch1, cut yarn, leave a long tail for sewing and fasten off.

Shape Flower

  • Weave in the starting yarn tail.
  • Thread the end yarn tail onto a needle.

Have the wrong side facing up, tightly roll the piece along the ch-3 edge to create a tight flower head, as you roll, use the yarn needle to sew and secure the piece at the base, fasten off and weave in ends

Calyx

Foundation, col B, 3.5 mm hk - ch3, sl st into 1st ch to make a ring.

Rnd 1 - ch2 (count as 1dc), 11dc into ring, sl st into top of ch-2 to join. [12dc]

Rnd 3 - * ch4, 1sc in 2nd ch from hk, 1hdc in next 2-sts, sk 1-st on rnd 1, sl st into next, rpt from * 6 times, making the last sl st in the same sp as the ch-4, cut yarn, leave a long tail for sewing and fasten off. [6 calyx leaves]

Bookmark strap

Rnd 1, col C, 3.5 mm hk - ch3, (1hdc, 1dc, 1tr, ch3, sl st into 3rd ch from hk, 1tr, 1dc, 1hdc)in 3rd ch from hk, sl st into top of 1st hdc to join,  (pull the starting yarn tail tight to close the ring), sl st into top of ch-3, change to a 3 mm hk, ch60 (or as many chains as you need to get the length you desire), cut yarn, leave a long tail for sewing, fasten off.

Finish

  • Weave in the starting yarn tail of the leaf.
  • Thread the remaining yarn tail from the strap onto a needle, insert the needle from the outside of the calyx into the centre ring and bring it to the inside of the calyx, secure the end into place, inside the calyx. Fasten off weave in ends.
  • Secure the calyx to the flower, wrap the calyx around the base of the flower, sew the calyx to the flower head working stitches along the top edge of rnd1 of the calyx, fasten off weave in ends.
