Finishing Your Crochet Sunflower Coasters and Basket
Crochet Sunflower Coasters - Finishing & Shaping
Once you have finished your coasters and woven in all loose ends, gently shape them for the best final appearance.
To help the coasters lay flat:
- Place the coaster on a flat surface
- Hold it down gently with one hand
- Carefully pull each petal outward with the other hand
This helps open up the sunflower shape and improve symmetry.
Optional: Blocking your coasters
For an even more polished finish, you may wish to block your coasters.
Blocking involves lightly wetting or steaming the finished piece and shaping it to the correct size. This helps:
- Even out stitches
- Improve structure
- Create a flatter, more professional finish
Crochet Basket - Finishing
- Use a yarn needle to weave in all loose ends securely.
- Make sure all ends are fastened tightly to maintain the basket's shape and durability.
Common Mistakes When Making Crochet Sunflower Coasters
Even simple crochet patterns can have a few tricky spots. Here are some common issues and how to fix them:
Coasters curling or not laying flat
This usually happens if your tension is too tight or if the stitch count is off. Try:
• Using a slightly larger hook
• Checking your stitch count at the end of each round
• Some coaster do curl sightly but flatten when pressed down by hand or wet blocking.
Petals look uneven
Uneven petals can happen if stitches are missed or placed in the wrong space.
• Double check where each cluster stitch is placed
• Use stitch markers to keep track of repeats
Gaps between stitches
Loose tension or inconsistent yarn can create gaps.
• Keep your tension even throughout
• Try a slightly smaller hook if needed
Basket losing shape
If your basket feels floppy:
• Switch to a tighter tension
• Consider using a slightly thicker yarn
• Make sure stitches are worked evenly

Thank you for the pattern! Very cute! I didn't have any of the yarn listed so I used a Medium 4 and an H hook (5). Also, "Color B" needs to be added to Round 3 of the Sunflower coaster. I had to frog that row when I realized I should have changed colors. Also, Round 7 of the basket sides does not include that it's to be in the back loop only on the printed version.
Harriet says
Thank you for letting me know about the errors in the pattern! I've updated the pattern now. I'm glad you enjoyed crocheting it!
Lisa says
I keep getting a blocker of unlocked this exclusive content and it won’t allow me to print.
Miranda Hutton says
I’ve tried making the coaster basket several times and it keeps wanting to curl up after the second round of 36 dc and again after the second round of 54 dc. Is this an error? In your photos the coaster bottom lies flat and the 3 times I’ve attempted this pattern it’s not working right for me.
Harriet says
Thanks for reaching out.
I’m sorry to hear you’re having issues with the sunflower coaster with basket pattern.
I have just tested the basket pattern out, using the same yarn and hook size as stated on the blog.
There is a slight curve to the bottom of the basket after making round 5, but it should flatten out after making the half double crochet stitches in round 6.
When you get to round 7, this is the start of the basket sides. Because there is no increase in the number of stitches in this round (and the remaining rounds) these rows will naturally curve up to form the sides.
Some things you might like to consider which could help you solve your problem:
• Everyone crochets differently, you may like to try and adjust your tension when you crochet. If you loosen your crochet tension, this would create a looser stitch, which may stop the curling.
• Yarn weights can vary and this could also contribute to the curving, perhaps go up from a 3.75mm hook to a 4mm hook.
I hope this helps!

What brand of yarn is this, and/or where can I get it? I like these specific shades of gold and brown.
Harriet says
Thanks so much! The yarn I used is a #2 fine weight yarn. It's a mix of 100% cotton and a cotton-acrylic blend. I picked it up locally in Australia, and the brand is 4 Seasons. The specific yarn is called Brighton the shade mustard and Flinders in the shade Turmeric. Hope that helps!
Brea says
I LOVE this pattern! Do you by any chance have a pattern for sunflower leaves about the same size? I'm using these flowers for the edging of a blanket and would love to include green leaves 💚🍃
