Pattern Instructions

Foundation

Foundation - Ch 42. The length of the chain should be 12 inches (30cm). This is the height of the hat and includes the measurements for a fold-up band of about 2.5 inches (5cm).

NOTE:

If you would like a taller hat and make it like a slouch hat, increase the number of chains to your desired length. As a general rule, a slouch hat is about 2 inches (5cm longer).

If you would like a shorter hat (for a child/teen) decrease the number of chains to your desired length. The height of a child's hat is about 7.5 inches (19cm) and a teen's hat is about 8 inches (20cm), add an extra 1.9 - 2 inches (4.8 - 5 cm) for a fold-up band.

Row One

Row 1 - Single crochet into the 2nd chain from the hook, then make 1 single crochet in each stitch to the end, turn. [You should have 41 single crochet in this round.]

Abbreviated Version

Row 1 - Sc into the 2nd ch from the hk, 1sc in each stitch to the end, turn. [41sc]

Note: - If you have decreased or increased the number of stitches your stitch count will always be one stitch less than the number of foundation chains you made - eg if you made 52 chains, your stitch count would be 51 stitches, if you made 25 chains, your stitch count would be 24 stitches.

Round Two

Row 2 - Chain 1 (this is not counted as a stitch), single crochet into the back loop only (BLO) of each stitch to the end, turn. [41 single crochet in this round.]

Abbreviated Version

Row 2 - Ch1 (not counted as a st), sc in the BLO of each st to the end, turn. [41sc]

Repeat row 2 until your work measures 2.55 - 4 inches (6 - 10 cm) less than the head circumference. For this pattern, the finished piece measured 19 inches (48cm).

This measurement of 2.55 - 4 inches (6 - 10 cm) is called negative ease which will allow for the beanies to stretch and sit on the head without being too loose or too tight.

For a custom fit - before finishing the piece wrap it around your head and check for fit with the band folded up. If it feels too loose, undo a few rounds, and if it feels too tight add a few more.

After making the last row, do not cut the yarn, because you will use it to crochet the back seam.

Finishing

Seam the ends - Fold the crochet piece in half so that the last row and the foundation rows meet and join the two together with a crochet slip stitch, cut the yarn, fasten off, and weave in the ends.

Arrange the piece so that the seam you just made sits in the center of the piece - this is the back seam.

Close the crown - Thread a length of yarn onto a darning needle and close one of the remaining openings with a running stitch - securing the yarn at both ends. Turn the piece inside out.

Create the ears - Measure and mark on each side of the beanie 3 inches (7.5 cm) from each side along the top of the crown, then measure 3 inches (7.62cm) down each side (see image below).

Then thread a needle with matching yarn and join the two marked points on each side with running stitches to create the ears.
