About This Easy Fall Leaves Crochet Pattern

  • This is a quick pattern to make and an easy one to remember and is made up in just five rounds.
  • Once you have made two or three of these and have gotten used to the pattern you can easily make one in less than 30 minutes.
  • This pattern uses very little yarn, making it a good pattern for stash-busting.
  • Make a set of these for crochet leaf coasters to give as gifts.
  • Make a bunch of them and string them together for a Fall themed garlands or bunting.
  • They also make great appliques on things like crocheted cushions, blankets, or other home decor items.
  • This is a free crochet pattern. You can find a printable pattern card at the end of this post.

You will need to know a few basic crochet stitches like, chain stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, treble stitch and slip stitch to make these crochet fall leaves.

What You Will Need

Yarn

  • DK (light worsted, 8ply) cotton blend or 100% cotton yarn.
  • You will need about 22 yards (20 meters) per crochet leaf in any color of your choice.

Hook

  • 3.75 (E/5) mm or a crochet hook size to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions

  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Finished Size

Orange, brown and red crochet fall leaves used as coasters.

The crochet fall leaves are about 4 inches (11 cm) wide.

Gauge

The crochet fall leaves are about 4 inches (11 cm) at their widest point when made in #3 Light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) yarn and 3.75 (E/5) mm hook.

Check your gauge: Use any hook size to obtain the correct gauge.

Pattern Instructions

Below are step-by-step instructions for making an autumn leaf.

Foundation - Magic ring, or chain 4, slip stitch into first chain to form a ring.

Abbreviated version

Foundation - MR, or ch4 sl st in 1st chain to form a ring.

Row One

Row 1 - Chain 2 (this not counted as a stitch), make 12 double crochet stitches in the ring, pull the yarn tail to tighten the magic ring, and slip-stitch into the top of the first double crochet to join. 

You should have 12 double crochet stitches.

Abbreviated version

Row 1 - Ch2 (not a st), 12dc, sl st in the 1st dc to join. [12dc]

Row Two

Round two of crochet pattern.

Row 2 - Chain 2 (this is not counted as a stitch), make 2 double crochet stitches in each stitch around, and slip-stitch into the top of the first double crochet to join. 

You should have 24 double crochet stitches.

Abbreviated version

Row 2 - Ch2 (not a st), (2dc) in each st around, sl st in the 1st dc to join. [24dc]

Row Three

Round three of leaf pattern.

Row 3 - Chain 2 (this is not counted as a stitch), *work 2 double crochet stitches in the next stitch, then 1 double crochet in the next, then 2 double crochets in the next, repeat from around, then slip-stitch into the first double crochet to join.

You should have 36 double crochet stitches.

Abbreviated version

Row 3 - Ch2 (not a st), *(2dc) in next st, 1 dc in next, (2dc) in next st, rpt from * around, sl st in 1st dc to join. [36dc]

Row Four

Row 4 - *Skip 2 stitches, make 9 double crochets in the next stitch, then skip 2 stitches and slip-stitch into the next stitch, repeat from * four more times.

Single crochet in the next two stitches, then chain 9, and make 7 slip-stitches down the chain starting from the 3rd stitch from the hook. 

Next, slip-stitch into the next stitches, then make a single crochet into the next two stitches, then slip-stitch into the next.

Abbreviated version

Row 4 - *sk 2-sts, 9dc in next st, sk 2-sts, sl st in next st, repeat from * four more times, 2sc, ch9, make 7 sl sts down the chain starting from the 3rd st from the hk, sl st in next st, then 1sc in each of the next 2-sts, sl st in next st.

Row Five

Row 5 - *Single crochet in each of the next 5 stitches, then make 1 half double crochet, 1 double crochet, pico (chain 3, then slip stitch into the first chain), and 1 half double crochet in the next stitch.

Then make a single crochet in each of the next three stitches, then slip-stitch into the next stitch, and repeat this pattern from * one more time.

Next, make 1 single crochet in each of the next two stitches, then a half double crochet in the next, and double crochet in the next stitch. 

Then work 1 double crochet, 1 treble, pico, and 1 double crochet into the next stitch. 

Into the next stitch make a double crochet, then a half double crochet into the next, then one single crochet in each of the next two stitches, and slip stitch into the next.

** Make a single crochet in each of the next three stitches, then work 1 half double crochet, pico, and 2 half double crochets into the next stitch, single crochet in each of the next five stitches, slip stitch into the next stitch, repeat from ** one more time, chain 1, cut yarn and fasten off, weave in ends. 

Abbreviated version

Row 5 - *5sc, (1hdc, 1 dc, pico, 1hdc) in next st, 3sc, sl st, rpt from * 1 more time, 2sc, 1hdc, 1dc, (1dc, 1tr, pico,1dc) in next st, 1dc, 1hdc, 2sc, sl st, **3sc, (1hdc, pico, 2hdc) in next st, 5sc, sl st, rpt from **one more time, ch1 cut yarn and fasten off, weave in ends.
