A mini crochet basket with foil wrapped chocolates.

This small crochet basket pattern with handles is a quick, practical project perfect for organizing small items around your home. Made with single crochet stitches and simple shaping, it is designed to hold its shape while still being easy enough for confident beginners.

The pattern works up fast and is a great choice if you a looking for a low-commitment project that is both functional and giftable.

About This Small Crochet Basket

  • This small crochet basket pattern is ideal for beginners and works up quickly.
  • These baskets are made with double strands of worsted-weight yarn, making them thick and sturdy.
  • You will want to use a hook size smaller than recommended for a thick yarn because it gives a nice and tight stitch which will help make the sides stand tall.
  • The size of these baskets can easily be adjusted by increasing rounds in the base and the sides of the basket.

Stitches Used

You will need to know a few basic crochet stitches like chain stitch, single crochet and slip stitch to make this small crochet basket.

Yarn To Use

You can use just about any yarn to make crochet baskets, but some are better than others.

When selecting yarn for crochet baskets, consider things like the durability and texture of the yarn.

The most common types of yarn used to make baskets are:

  • Cotton yarn
  • Acrylic yarn
  • T-shirt yarn
  • Jute or hemp yarn
  • Wool yarn
  • Bulky or chunky yarn

For this pattern, I used two strands of #4 medium (worsted weight, 10ply) acrylic/viscose yarn in a tweed color.

I did this because after testing the pattern with one strand of my chosen yarn, the sides did not hold up as well as I would have liked.

You could even use three or more strands of other lighter yarn weights to make crochet baskets, for example:

I used three strands of #3 light (DK, 8ply) cotton yarn to make the basket in this pattern for round crochet coasters and basket set.

Using three strands gave me the sturdy structure I wanted for the basket.

What You Will Need

Yarn

  • #4 Medium worsted weight (Afghan, Aran, 10ply) yarn
  • You will need 2 strands of yarn, each about 32 yards (30 meters) long.

Hook

  • 6.5 mm (K-10.5) hook

Notions

  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Finished Size & Gauge

Two empty crochet baskets on a wooden board.

Finished size:

The finished size of this crochet mini basket is about 5.5 inches (14 cm) in diameter and 2.36 inches (6 cm) high.

Gauge:

The gauge is not that important for this project. However, if you find that the stitches are not firm and tight, consider going down a hook size or two.
