Stitches Used
This pattern uses basic stitches like chain stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, treble stitch and slip stitch. You will also need to know how to make a magic ring.
Double Crochet Cluster Stitches (dcCL)
For this pattern, you will also need to know how to make 2dcCl and 3dcCl stitches:
A double crochet cluster stitches are made by working incomplete double crochets in the same space which are then completed as one stitch, which means that the extra stitches made will not change the stitch count.
2dcCl (2 double crochet cluster)
- Yarn over hook (YO), insert hook into a stitch, yarn over the hook (YO), and pull the yarn through the stitch. You should have three loops on your hook.
- Yarn over the hook (YO) and pull the yarn through the first two loops on the hook. You should now have two loops on the hook.
- Yarn over the hook (YO), insert hook into the same stitch, then yarn over the hook (YO), and pull the yarn through the stitch. You should now have four loops on the hook.

Yarn and Hook Information
We used #2 fine (sport, baby, 5-ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with 16-18 wraps per inch (WPI) for this pattern.
To make the coaster thicker and sturdier, we worked with two strands of yarn and chose a 4.5 mm hook, which gave us the desired size for the finished coaster.
You can use different yarn weights, such as #4 medium or #5 chunky yarn, with an appropriate hook size to make these coasters.
If you opt for lighter yarns like #1 or #2, consider using two, three, or more strands to achieve your desired coaster size.
Keep in mind that the size of the coasters will vary depending on the materials you use, your hook size and tension.
How To Make An Owl Coaster
This is a simple pattern primarily worked in double crochet stitches. Most of it uses two strands of #2 fine yarn, but the eyes are made with a single strand to prevent creating a bulky patch on the coaster, which could make a cup unstable.
First Round
The pattern starts with a Magic Ring, however, you can also start the design by chaining 4 and slip stitching into the first chain to form a ring.
The first round is made up of 12 double crochet stitches, the second round is made up of double crochet cluster stitches.
Second Round
Double crochet cluster stitches are worked into the spaces between the double crochet stitches of the first round. This round consists of 11 groups of 2dcCL stitches in color A and one 3dcCl in color B for the beak.
There is no need to cut the yarn color A when changing colors for the beak, just drop it and bring in the new color as the chain 1 stitch before the 3dcCl and pick it up again when making the chain 1 stitch after making the 3dcCl.
Third Round
The third round changes to color C, this round must start in the third chain 1 space to the right of the beak, if you do not start it here the fourth round of the pattern will be off.
The third round is made by working three double crochet stitches into each chain 1 space.
Fourth Round
The fourth round shapes the head and the wings, this round consists of single crochets, half double crochets, double crochets, treble stitches, and chain stitches.
Feet
The feet are crocheted onto the owl into the sixth stitch counted from under each wing.
Eyes
To make the eyes, crochet two small circles using a single strand of yarn. Then, slip stitch black yarn between the double crochet stitches to create the eyelids.
