What Is Crochet Moss Stitch

Moss stitch is one of the easiest crochet stitches you will ever learn.

This stitch pattern comprises of single crochets and chain stitches and produces a thick and dense fabric great for making dishcloths, washcloths, blankets, bags, clothing, and more.

Learn more about these two stitches in the section below titled crochet stitches.

If you are not familiar with moss stitch, you might want to work through our tutorial on how to crochet the moss stitch.

What You Will Need

Yarn

For these moss stitch crochet dishcloths, I used two strands of DK (lightweight, 8ply) 100 % cotton yarn, but you could use any worsted 100% cotton yarn.

I used about 98 yards (90 meters) of yarn from each skein. If you are using a worsted yarn you will only need to use one strand of about 98 yards (90 meters).

Hook

G/6, 4 mm or a crochet hook size to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions

  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Finished Size

Crocheted dishcloths on a wooden board.

The dishcloth is approximately 9 x 9 inches (23 x 23cm).

Gauge

18 single crochet stitches and 18 rows = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm).

Check your gauge: Use any hook size to obtain the correct gauge.
