About This Crochet Basket
- This crochet basket is worked in one piece, with the basket handles crocheted into the basket in the last four rounds.
- It features a simple decorative crochet edge that is made with reverse single crochet stitches (which is very easy to do).
- This basket is a medium to large basket that can double up as a small tote bag.
- Make it in any color you like to suit your decor.
- This basket is small enough to use for storage on a shelf and large enough for it to look great sitting on the floor next to a table or desk.
What Type Of Yarn To Use
I used two strands of #4 medium (worsted, Afgan, Aran, 10ply) acrylic yarn for this crochet basket pattern.
The double thickness of the yarn makes it sturdy, and the sides hold up without extra support for a large crochet basket of this size.
You could also use other yarn weights like super bulky yarn, or Bernat blanket yarn.
However, if you use other yarn weights you will have to adjust the hook size by going down a size or two than what is recommended on the yarn label.
This is because when making a crocheted basket you want the stitches to be nice and tight so that the basket sides with stand firm without other support.
And if you do use a different yarn weight and hook size your basket could be larger or smaller depending on the weights you use.
Crochet Stitches
You will need to know how to make a chain stitch, single crochet (sc), and slip stitch to make this crochet basket with a handle pattern.
Front Loops (FLO) And Back Loops (BLO)
In this pattern, you will need to know the difference between the front or back loops of stitches. If you are not sure what this means, check out our blog post understanding front and back loops in crochet. It explains everything in a super easy way.
Reverse Single Crochet (RSC)
In this pattern, you will be using a technique called 'reverse single crochet,' it adds a lovely decorative edge to your items.
If you are not familiar with it, no worries! Head over to our post on how to make a reverse single crochet to get the hang of it.
It is simple and adds a fun twist to your crochet projects!

Frequently Asked Questions
There are two ways to put handles onto a crochet basket. One way is to work the handles into the basket as you crochet, like in this pattern. The other way is to crochet the handles separately and sew them into place.
The best crochet stitch for a basket is a short stitch like a single crochet or half double crochet because these are short stitches that crochet into firm and tight fabric which is ideal for baskets.

Could I make this basket using t-shirt yarn or Bernat maker? This will be my first basket. Looking to make for Christmas gifts.
Do you have a set of 3 nesting baskets?
Thanks much!
Marlene
Harriet says
I've never used t-shirt yarn but I think is should work. Currently I don't have a set of 3 nesting baskets on my site.
Cristina says
Is this a mistake?
"Round Fifteen - Thirty Four
Rounds 15 - 34 - Make a single crochet into each stitch of round 14. After working the last round (27) slip stitch into the next stitch. [You should still have 72 stitches in this round.]"
Should it not be last round 34? Am I missing something? I am a beginner...
Harriet says
Cristina, Thanks for bring the error to my attention. It has be corrected.
