    About This Crochet Basket

    • This crochet basket is worked in one piece, with the basket handles crocheted into the basket in the last four rounds.
    • It features a simple decorative crochet edge that is made with reverse single crochet stitches (which is very easy to do).
    • This basket is a medium to large basket that can double up as a small tote bag.
    • Make it in any color you like to suit your decor.
    • This basket is small enough to use for storage on a shelf and large enough for it to look great sitting on the floor next to a table or desk.
    • This is a free crochet pattern. You can find a printable pattern card at the end of this post.

If you like this basket pattern, you might also like these simple round double crochet basket with coasters, this small crochet basket pattern with handles, or these crochet basket patterns.

What Type Of Yarn To Use

I used two strands of #4 medium (worsted, Afgan, Aran, 10ply) acrylic yarn for this crochet basket pattern.

The double thickness of the yarn makes it sturdy, and the sides hold up without extra support for a large crochet basket of this size.

You could also use other yarn weights like super bulky yarn, or Bernat blanket yarn.

However, if you use other yarn weights you will have to adjust the hook size by going down a size or two than what is recommended on the yarn label.

This is because when making a crocheted basket you want the stitches to be nice and tight so that the basket sides with stand firm without other support.

And if you do use a different yarn weight and hook size your basket could be larger or smaller depending on the weights you use.

    Crochet Stitches

You will need to know how to make a chain stitch, single crochet (sc), and slip stitch to make this crochet basket with a handle pattern. Find out more about these stitches below.

    Chain Stich (ch)

    1. Make a slip knot.
    2. Yarn over hook (YO)
    3. Draw a loop of yarn back up through the loop on the crochet hook. One chain stitch made.
    4. Yarn over hook (YO) and draw a loop through the loop on the hook to create another chain, and repeat to create new chain stitches.
    5. See how to start a crochet chain stitch with detailed step-by-step instructions.

    Single Crochet (sc)

    1. Yarn over hook (YO), insert hook from the front to the back of a stitch.
    2. Yarn over hook (YO) and pull back up through the stitch. You should have two loops on the hook.
    3. Yarn over the hook (YO) and pull the yarn back through all the loops on the hook.
    4. This completes a single crochet stitch.
    5. See how to single crochet with detailed step-by-step instructions.

    Slip Stitch (sl st)

    1. Insert the hook from the from to the back of a stitch.
    2. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through both the stitch and the loop on the hook.
    3. This completes a slip stitch.
    4. See how to crochet a slip stitch with detailed step-by-step instructions.

You will also need to know how to find the front of a loop (FLO) and the back of a loop (BLO) to work stitches into, as well as how to reverse single crochet (RSC).

You can learn more about these in our special stitches section further down the page.

    • Each of the stitches will look like a "V" laying down with its point, pointing to the left and away from the hook if you are a right-hand crocheter.
    • The loop of the "V" that is at the front of the work is referred to as the front loop.
    • This single front loop is the part of the stitch you need to crochet into whenever a pattern asks you to crochet into the front loop only.
    • In patterns, you will see this term written as FL or FLO which refers to front loop or front loop only.
    • You may even see it in patterns written listed with a stitch for example; as hdc-flo (half double crochet in the front loop only) or tr-flo (treble stitch in the front loop only).

Back Loop / Back Loop Only (BL or BLO)

    • When you normally crochet you tend to look at the side of the work. To identify the back loop, look at the row from the top.
    • Each of the stitches will look like a "V" laying down with its point, pointing to the left and away from the hook if you are a right-hand crocheter.
    • The loop of the "V" that is at the back of the work is referred to as the back loop.
    • This single back loop is the part of the stitch you need to crochet into whenever a pattern asks you to crochet into the back loop only.
    • In patterns, you will see this term written as BL or BLO which refers to back loop or back loop only.
    • You may even see it in patterns written listed with a stitch for example; dc-blo (double crochet in the back loop only) or sc-blo (single crochet in the back loop only).

    Reverse Single Crochet (RSC)

    1. Insert the hook from the front to the back, in the next stitch to the right of the hook.
    2. Yarn over hook (YO) and draw the yarn back through the stitch. You will now have two loops on the hook.
    3. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through the two loops on the hook.
    4. This completes on reverse single crochet stitch.
    5. See how to reverse single crochet stitch with detailed step-by-step instructions.

    Abbreviated version

RSC - Insert hk from front to back of next st to the right of the hk, YO pull yarn through st, YO pull yarn though both loops on hk.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do you put handles on a crochet basket?

There are two ways to put handles onto a crochet basket. One way is to work the handles into the basket as you crochet, like in this pattern. The other way is to crochet the handles separately and sew them into place.

What is the best crochet stitch for a basket?

The best crochet stitch for a basket is a short stitch like a single crochet or half double crochet because these are short stitches that crochet into firm and tight fabric which is ideal for baskets.
