About This Citrus Coaster Pattern
- We used #3 light acrylic yarn, which is also known as light worsted weight, DK, or 8ply, and has a thickness of 12 WPI (wraps per inch). Alternatively, you can go for 100% cotton or a cotton blend with a comparable weight.
- While the recommended hook size for our yarn was 4mm (G/6), we chose a slightly smaller 3mm (D/3) for a tighter stitch.
- These adorable crochet citrus coasters are not only charming but also make for a quick and delightful crafting project, perfect for selling at markets.
- Feel free to grab the printable pattern card at the end of this post.
What Type Of Yarn Is Best For Crochet Coaster?
Choosing cotton or a cotton blend for crocheting coasters is great because cotton is good at soaking up moisture, making your coasters last longer.
Cotton feels soft and stays strong. It will not trap heat, so it is safe for hot cups.
But if you want more color choices and a lower cost, you can also use acrylic yarn.
Just know that acrylic may not soak up moisture as well as cotton. So, it is a bit of a trade-off between practicality and budget.
Depending on what you want, either cotton or acrylic can work for making your crochet coasters.
Crochet Stitches
You will need to know some basic crochet stitches like chain stitch, single crochet, and slip stitch to make these citrus coasters.
Reverse Single Crochet (RSC)
In this pattern, you will be using a technique called 'reverse single crochet,' it adds a lovely decorative edge to your items.
If you are not familiar with it, no worries! Head over to our post on how to make a reverse single crochet to get the hang of it.
It is simple and adds a fun twist to your crochet projects!

Pattern Notes
US Crochet Terms
The information in this guide refers to US crochet terms, and instructions are for the right-handed.
- When you want to switch colors, finish working until the end of the round. Then, connect to the next round by making a slip stitch in the first stitch of that round. After that, keep going with the new color.
- Don't turn your work after finishing each round.
- To keep track of where each round starts, use a stitch marker. Put it on the first single crochet of each round and move it up as you progress.

- Begin by threading the yarn tail through a yarn needle.
- Starting from the back of the coaster, insert the needle from the back to the front at the base of the last stitch made in round 10. Pull the yarn through to the front.
- Create a straight line with the yarn by inserting the needle into the groove between rounds 1 and 2. Draw the yarn to the back of the coaster.
- Move underneath the coaster and bring the needle back up to the front between rounds 1 and 2 on the opposite side of the long stitch just made. Then, guide it back down to the back of the coaster at the base of the opposite stitch in round 10.
- From the back of the coaster, weave the yarn under the base of 5-6 stitches in round ten.
- Repeat steps 2-5 to segment the coaster. Continue until you have divided the coaster into eight sections.
- Fasten off the yarn, weave in the end, and trim away any excess yarn.
