A Sweet And Simple Crochet Pouch
This puff stitch crochet pouch with a drawstring is a cute and easy project that’s great for beginners. It is a medium size bag, so it’s the perfect size for holding small gifts, treats, or keepsakes.
The pouch is made with single crochet, double crochet and puff stitches, which create pretty little shapes that look like hearts. These stitches give the pouch a soft, lacy look, and the scalloped top edge makes it even more special. A simple drawstring pulls the pouch closed and adds a nice handmade touch.
This two-toned pouch is quick to make and easy to customize with your favorite colors. It’s perfect for Mother’s Day, birthdays, or as a sweet way to wrap a small gift for any occasion.

This pattern features a variation on the puff stitch, which we have slightly adapted to suit this design:
- Yarn over hook (YO) and insert the hook into a stitch.
- Yarn over the hook (YO), and pull the yarn back up through the stitch. You will have three loops on the hook.

- This completes a puff stitch.
Yarn and Hook Information
We tested the pattern with two different yarn types: 100% cotton and an acrylic blend.
One was #2 fine (sport, baby, 5ply) yarn weight, approximately 16-18 wraps per inch (WPI).
The other was #3 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) yarn weight, approximately 13 wraps per inch (WPI).
For the #2 fine yarn pouch, we chose a 3mm hook size, and for the cotton acrylic blend, we used a 3.5mm hook size, as these sizes gave the best overall appearance for the yarns.
When selecting yarn for this crochet drawstring pouch, feel free to experiment with different hook sizes to achieve your desired look.

Finishing
Blocking (Optional)
- If the bag appears distorted, you can block it to help the stitches align to improve its overall shape, giving it a professional finish.
- If you block the pouch, do this before adding the drawstrings and label.
If you are unsure how to block a crochet piece, refer to our guide on blocking a granny square. The principles are similar.
Drawstrings
- Insert one end of the first drawstring into round 26 (a puff stitch round) and weave it in and out through the stitches around the entire circumference of the bag. Once you have completed the circle, tie the ends together in a knot.
- Repeat the process for the second drawstring on the opposite side of the bag in round 26, making sure to weave it in and out through the opposite stitches to the first cord. Tie the ends together in a knot.
- Pull both drawstrings to ensure they move freely, and adjust the bag's opening as needed. Ensure the knots are secure to prevent the drawstrings from slipping out.

Label (or embellishment) - optional
- Hand sew on your desired label or embellishments.
