Crochet Ghost Amigurumi Pattern

About This Amigurumi Ghost

• This is an easy crochet amigurumi pattern and is ideal for a beginner. 
• It crochets up very quickly, and you can use any size of yarn to make this - see our notes about yarn below.
• This little ghost pattern is worked in one piece from the top down, you can make it with or without the witch hat.
• When made in lightweight yarns like DK or sports these little ghosts are great for keychains, zipper pulls, or bag charms.
• Make them in heavier yarn weights or work with two strands of yarn to make cute stuffed plushie toys.

Type of Yarn To Use

You can use almost any kind of yarn for amigurumi, but it is best to a type that does not stretch too much.

This way, you will create a firm fabric that keeps the stuffing inside.

The thickness of the yarn you choose will change how big or small your item turns out.

Chunky and bulky weight yarns make things quite large, while worsted weight yarn makes them somewhat medium size and lighter ones like DK and sport yarn make them smaller.

When selecting your yarn, do not use the suggested hook size. Instead, choose a hook size that is one or two sizes smaller. This way, your stitches will be tight and neat.

Crochet Stitches

You will need to know a few basic stitches like; chain stitch, single crochet, double crochet, treble stitch and slip stitch to make this amigurumi ghost pattern. Learn more about these stitches below.

Chain Stich (ch)

1. Make a slip knot.
2. Yarn over hook (YO)
3. Draw a loop of yarn back up through the loop on the crochet hook. One chain stitch made.
4. Yarn over hook (YO) and draw a loop through the loop on the hook to create another chain, and repeat to create new chain stitches.

Single Crochet (sc)

1. Yarn over hook (YO), insert hook from the front to the back of a stitch.
2. Yarn over hook (YO) and pull back up through the stitch. You should have two loops on the hook.
3. Yarn over the hook (YO) and pull the yarn back through all the loops on the hook.
4. This completes a single crochet stitch.

Double Crochet Stitch (dc)

1. Yarn over hook (YO), insert the hook from the front to the back of a stitch.
2. Yarn over hook (YO) again and pull back up through the stitch. You will have three loops on the hook.
3. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through two loops on the hook. You will now have two loops on the hook.
4. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through the two loops on the hook.
5. This completes a double crochet stitch.

Treble Crochet (or Triple Crochet) (tr)

1. Wrap the yarn over the hook (YO) twice, and insert the hook from the front to the back of a stitch.
2. Yarn over hook (YO) again and pull back up through the stitch. You will have four loops on the hook.
3. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through two loops on the hook. You will now have three loops on the hook.
4. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through two loops on the hook. You will now have two loops on the hook.
5. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through the two loops on the hook. 
6. This completes a treble crochet stitch.

Slip Stitch (sl st)

1. Insert the hook from the from to the back of a stitch.
2. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through both the stitch and the loop on the hook.
3. This completes a slip stitch.

What You Will Need

Yarn 

#3 Light ( light worsted, DK, 8py) 100% acrylic yarn or similar.

Ghost

• About 18.6 yards (17 meters) of white yarn.

Witch Hat 

• About 9.85 yards (9 meters) of red yarn
• A small amount of black yarn for the hat band
• A small amount of yellow yarn for the hat buckle

Hook

• 3.5mm hk or a hook size 1-2 sizes smaller than recommended on the yarn you are using.

Notions

• Scissors
• Yarn needle
• 10 mm Safety eyes, or yarn for embroidered eyes.
• Fiberfill for stuffing

Finished Size

The finished size of this little ghost is about 1.6 inches (4 cm) tall (without the witch hat) when made with #3 light (light worsted, DK, 8ply) yarn and a 3.5 mm hook.

Your ghost size may vary depending on the type of yarn used, hook size, tension, and how much stuffing you use.

Not so important for this pattern.

Special Stitches And Terms

Front Loop / Front Loop Only (FL or FLO)

• When you normally crochet you tend to look at the side of the work. To identify the front loop, look at the row from the top.
• Each of the stitches will look like a "V" laying down with its point, pointing to the left and away from the hook if you are a right-hand crocheter.
• The loop of the "V" that is at the front of the work is referred to as the front loop.
• This single front loop is the part of the stitch you need to crochet into whenever a pattern asks you to crochet into the front loop only.
• In patterns, you will see this term written as FL or FLO which refers to front loop or front loop only.
• You may even see it in patterns written listed with a stitch for example; as hdc-flo (half double crochet in the front loop only) or tr-flo (treble stitch in the front loop only).

Back Loop / Back Loop Only (BL or BLO)

• When you normally crochet you tend to look at the side of the work. To identify the back loop, look at the row from the top.
• Each of the stitches will look like a "V" laying down with its point, pointing to the left and away from the hook if you are a right-hand crocheter.
• The loop of the "V" that is at the back of the work is referred to as the back loop.

sc2tog

Single crochet 2 together is a way to decrease the number of stitches in a row or round. It is done by partially working two single crochets in two consecutive stitches and completing them as one stitch.

1. Insert the hook into the first stitch.
2. Yarn over and pull up a loop, you will have 2 loops on your hook.
3. Insert the hook into the next stitch.
4. Yarn over and pull up a loop, you will have 3 loops on your hook.
5. Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.
6. This completes the sc2tog.

Abbreviated version

sc2tog - Insert hk in st, YO pull up loop, (2 loops on hk), insert hk in next st, YO and pull up loop (3 loops on hk), YO pull through 3 loops on hk.

Pattern Notes

• This amigurumi pumpkin is crocheted in a spiral, so do not join the rounds.
• Use a stitch marker to make the first stitch of each round as you go.

Pattern Instructions

Round One

Round 1, white yarn - Chain 2, and make 6 single crochets into the 1st chain stitch. [6 single crochet in this round.]

Note: You could also work this round into a magic ring instead of a chain stitch.

Abbreviated version

Round 1, white yarn - Ch2, make 6sc in 1st ch. [6sc]

Round Two

Round 2 - Make 2 single crochet in each of the next 6 stitches. [12 single crochets in this round.]

Abbreviated version

Round 2 - 2sc in the next 6-sts. [12sc]

Round Three

Round 3 - (Make a single crochet in the next stitch, then make 2 single crochets in the next), repeat the instructions in the brackets 6 times. [You should have 18 single crochets in this round.]

Abbreviated version

Round 3 - (sc in next st, 2sc in next) rpt 6 times. [18sc]

Round Four

Round 4 - (Make a single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, then make 2 single crochets in the next), repeat the instructions in the brackets 6 times. [You should now have 24 single crochets in this round.]

Abbreviated version

Round 4 - (sc in next 2-sts, 2sc in next) rpt 6 times. [24sc]

Pull the yarn tail tight to close the first round made, and fasten off the tail.

There is no need to cut the yarn tail, tuck it inside the cavity when adding the stuffing.

Rounds Five - Eight

Rounds 5-8 - Make a single crochet in each stitch around. [You should have 24 single crochets in each round.] 

Abbreviated version

Rounds 5-8 - Sc in each st. [24sc] 

Round 9

Round 9 (arms) - Make a single crochet in each of the next 6 stitches, then in the next stitch (single crochet, chain 5, then make a single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook, then single crochet in each of the next 4 chain stitches), the single crochet in next 10 stitches of the ghost's body.

Then in the next stitch (single crochet, chain 5, then make a single crochet in 2nd chain from the hook, then single crochet in each of the next 4 chain stitches), then single crochet into the next 6 stitches of the ghost's body. [You should have 24 single crochets in this round, and two crochet extensions for the arms.]

Abbreviated version

Round 9 (arms) - sc in next 6-sts, in next st (sc, ch5, sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in next 4-sts), sc in next 10-sts, in next st (sc, ch5, sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in next 4-sts), sc in next 6-sts. [24sc and 2 arms made.]

Insert safety eyes evenly between the arms and in between rounds 7 and 8, placing them five stitches apart.

Rounds Ten - Twelve

Rounds 10 - 12 - Make a single crochet stitch in each stitch around. [You should have 24 single crochets in each round.]

Abbreviated version

Rounds 10 - 12 - Sc in each st. [24sc]

Note: Rounds 13 -14 will be worked into the top of the same stitches in round 12. Round 13 is worked into the front loops only (FLO) of round 12, and round 14 is worked in the back loops only (BLO) of round 12.

Round Thirteen

Round 13 (ruffle), Work the stitches of this round in the front loops only(FLO) of round 12 - * make a double crochet, treble, and double crochet into a stitch, then slip stitch into the next stitch *, repeat from * to * 12 times.

[In this round you should have 12 groups of double crochet, treble, and double crochet stitches, and 12 slip stitches.) 

Abbreviated version

Round 13 (ruffle), FLO of round 12 - *(dc, tr, dc,) into st, sl st in next st*, rpt from * to * 12 times. [12 x (dc, tr, dc) and 12 x sl sts]

Round Fourteen

Round 14 (start of base), work the stitches of this round in the back loops only (BLO) of round 12 - Make a single crochet into each stitch around. [24 single crochets in this round.}

Abbreviated version

Round 14 (start of base), BLO of round 12 - sc into each st around. [24sc]

From now on crochet the stitches as you normally do.

Round Fifteen

Round 15 - (Single crochet in the next stitch, the single crochet 2 together), repeat the instructions in the brackets 8 times. [16 single crochets in this round.]

Abbreviated version

Round 15 - (sc in next st, sc2tog) rpt 8 times. [16sc]

Add some stuffing but don't overfill because you may find that it gets in the way of crocheting the last two rounds.

Round Sixteen

Round 16 - (Single crochet 2 toghethe), repeat the instructions in the brackets 8 times. [8 single crochets in this round.] 

Abbreviated version

Round 16 - (sc2tog) rpt 8 times. [8sc]

Cut yarn (leaving a long tail), and fill the ghost with more stuffing before closing the hole.

Witch Hat

I have not included detailed instructions for making the witch hat here but have included the instructions in the printable pattern below.

Finishing

Thread the yarn tail onto a yarn needle, and draw the yarn through the front loops of the last 8 stitches, pull tight to close the hole.

Position the hat on the ghost and sew into place.

• Finishing Hat

  Use black yarn, insert the hook into the brim where the FLO stitches were made, and bring up a loop. 

  Slip stitch around the brim working around the brim by slip stitching into the holes of the FLO stitches.

  When back to the first stitch, cut the yarn and draw the yarn tail to the inside of the hat, knot the starting and end tails, and trim away the excess. 

  Hat Buckle

  Cut a long piece of yellow yarn, and thread it onto a yarn needle, have the the yarn meet at the ends, to create a double thread and knot the end.

  Embroider a square buckle over the top of the slip stitch hat band, and fasten off.

Finish

• Position witch hat onto ghost and stitch in place.
