About This Easy Crochet Scarf Pattern

• This pattern is simple and is a great way for a beginner to put into practice some basic crochet stitches while making something practical.
• You will need to know how to chain stitch, and how to make single-crochet stitches and double-crochet stitches.

Yarn Used For This Crochet Scarf

I used #3 light (DK, light worsted, 8ply) 100% acrylic yarn for this crochet scarf but you could use any other similar yarn or yarn weight to suit your needs.

If you use another yarn weight such as a bulky weight yarn, or super bulky yarn the finished scarf will end up being wider and larger, so you will have to reduce the number of stitches and rows and use an appropriate size hook.

Scarf Pattern Variations

Adjust the width  - This pattern is easy to make wider, and this can be done by increasing the pattern stitch count in multiples of three plus an extra stitch.

Adjust the length - The pattern can be made longer or shorter by increasing or decreasing the number of rows.

Fringe - You can add a fringe to the short ends of the scarf in between the chain 2 spaces. You will need extra yarn because the yarn quantity in the pattern does not include the amount needed for a fringe.

Turn it into an infinity scarf by sewing the two short ends together to create a large loop that can be wrapped multiple times around your neck.

Design Notes

• This scarf is made with #3 light (DK) yarn which is thinner than worsted weight yarn and because of this, it does take a little longer to crochet. If you are a moderately fast crocheter it will take about 7 - 8 hours to make.
• The pattern uses six different colors all in a fall theme, but you can use other color combinations.
• The crochet block stitch is an easy two-repeat design that is used to create this easy crochet scarf.

Crochet Stitches

You will need to know a few basic crochet stitches to make this box stitch crochet scarf pattern, like chain stitch, single crochet, double crochet and slip stitch.

Double Crochet Stitch (dc)

1. Yarn over hook (YO), insert the hook from the front to the back of a stitch.
2. Yarn over hook (YO) again and pull back up through the stitch. You will have three loops on the hook.
3. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through two loops on the hook. You will now have two loops on the hook.
4. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through the two loops on the hook.
5. This completes a double crochet stitch.

Yarn

• Color A, about 76.55 yards (70 meters) of light blue yarn.
• Color B, about 76.55 yards (70 meters) of cream yarn.
• Color C, about 76.55 yards (70 meters) of yellow yarn.
• Color D, about 76.55 yards (70 meters) of orange yarn.
• Color E, about 76.55 yards (70 meters) of red yarn.

• 4.5mm crochet hook or size to obtain the correct gauge.

Finished Size

The finished size for this fall crochet scarf is 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide and 84 inches (213cm) long (this does not include the fringe).

Gauge

21 double crochets and 13 rows of the pattern = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm) square using a 4.5 mm hook.

Row 2 - Chain 1 (not counted as a stitch), 1 double crochet into the single crochet, then * make 3 double crochets in each of the next 9 chain 2 spaces, 1 double crochet in the last single crochet, turn.
