What You Will Need

Yarn

DK (light worsted yarn / #3 light yarn / 8ply) acrylic yarn, skein weight 3.5 ounces/100grams (251 yards/230 meters)

• Color A yellow (or color of choice) - 2 skeins
• Color B cream (or color of choice) - 4 skeins
• Color C red (or color of choice) - 9 skeins

Hook

• 9 mm or a crochet hook size to obtain the correct gauge
• 5 mm hook for joining

Notions

• Scissors
• Yarn needle

Finished Size

The finished size of the blanket is 55 x 39 inches (1.4 x 1 meter).

Gauge

The finished daisy granny square is 9 x 9 inches (23 x 23cm) from corner to corner.

Check your gauge: Use any hook size to obtain the correct gauge.

Stitches Used In This Pattern - US Terms

• ch - chain
• hdc - half double crochet
• sl st - slip stitch
• sc - single crochet
• st(s) - stitch(s)

• dc3 cluster - double crochet three cluster (see special stitches)

Special Stitches

Double crochet 3 cluster (dc3 cluster)

A double crochet 3 cluster is made by working three double crochets in the same space and completed as one stitch, which means that the extra stitches made will not change the stitch count.

1. Yarn over hook (YO), insert hook into a stitch, yarn over the hook (YO), and pull the yarn through the stitch. You should have three loops on your hook.
2. Yarn over the hook (YO) and pull the yarn through the first two loops on the hook. You should now have two loops on the hook.
3. Yarn over the hook (YO), insert hook into the same stitch, then yarn over the hook (YO), and pull the yarn through the stitch. You should now have four loops on the hook.
4. Yarn over the hook (YO) and pull the yarn through the first two loops on the hook. You should have three loops on the hook.
5. Yarn over the hook (YO), insert the hook into the same stitch, yarn over the hook, and pull the yarn through the stitch. You should now have five loops on the hook.
6. Yarn over the hook (YO) and pull the yarn through the first two loops on the hook. You should now have four loops on the hook.
7. Yarn over the hook (YO) and pull the yarn through all four loops remaining on your hook. 
8. Chain 1 to secure the stitch. 
9. This completes a dc3 cluster.

Abbreviated Version

dc3 cluster - YO, insert hook in st, YO, pull up loop, YO, pull through 2 loops, (YO, insert hook in same st, YO, pull up loop, YO, pull through 2 loops) twice, YO, pull through all 4 loops on hook, ch1.

Pattern Notes

• I recommend that you weave in the tail ends as you go because it will make working the rounds easier.

Daisy Blanket Instructions

Make a total of 48 daisy granny squares.

Foundation ring

Using Color A (yellow) and a 9mm hook, make a slip knot and chain 4, and slip stitch into the first chain to form a foundation ring.

Abbreviated Version

Foundation ring - Color A (9 mm hook), ch4, join with a sl st.

Round One

Daisy Center

Round 1 -  Color A. Chain 2 (does not count as a stitch), work 16 half double crochets into the foundation ring. 

Join with a slip stitch into the top of the first half double crochet, chain 1, cut yarn, and fasten off. 

You should have 16 half-double crochets.

Abbreviated version

Round 1 - Color A. Ch2 (does not count as a st), 16 hdc into ring. Join with sl st into top of first hdc, ch1, cut yarn, and fasten off. = 16 hdc

Round Two

Petals

Round 2 - Join Color B (cream) with a slip stitch into any half double crochet stitch from the previous round.

Chain 3, and double crochet 3 stitches together in the same stitch as chain 3, chain 3 and slip stitch into the same stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch. 

*(Chain 3, and double crochet 3 stitches together in the next stitch, chain 3 and slip stitch into the same stitch as double crochet 3 stitches together), slip stitch into the next stitch, repeat from * six more times, slip stitch into the base of the first chain 3, chain 1, cut yarn and fasten off. 

You should have 8 petals.

Abbreviated version

Round 2 - Color B. Sl st into top of any hdc of previous round. ch3, dc3 cluster in same sp as ch3, ch3, sl st into same st, sl st into next st. 

*(ch3, dc3 cluster, in next st, ch3, sl st in same st as dc3 cluster), sl st into next st, repeat from * 6 more times, sl st into base of first ch3, ch1, cut yarn, fasten off. = 8 petals

Finishing

Once you have completed the granny square, cut the yarn from the ball leaving a 6-inch (15 cm), and pull it through the last stitch. Use a darning needle to weave in the loose ends, before joining the squares.

Joining The Squares

In joining our squares, we have opted for a unique variation of the single crochet join. 

However, feel free to use your preferred method or look at our list of other ways to join granny squares below.

How to join the daisy granny squares.

Use a single strand of cream-colored yarn and a 5mm crochet hook for the joins. Join the squares in columns of 8 and rows of 6.

1. Start by picking up your first two granny squares and lay them on top of each other with the right sides facing out. Make a slip knot in your yarn and secure it onto your hook.
2. Insert your hook into the corner of the granny squares from front to back, yarn over your hook, and pull through to make a slip stitch. Then insert your hook back into the same corner, from back to front, and make a single crochet and chain 1.
3. Next, insert your hook into the back loops of the next two corresponding stitches from front to back. Yarn over your hook and pull up a loop, then yarn over again and pull through both loops to make a single crochet and chain 1.
4. Continue in this way, working a single crochet stitch in the back loop only followed by a chain 1 along each side of the squares until you reach the next corner.
5. When you reach the next corner space, work a single crochet stitch into the corner stitch.
6. Then, pick up two more squares and work a single crochet into the corner stitch of the second square. Continue to make single crochets and chain 1 as you join more squares.
7. When you reach the end of the seam for the column, finish with a single crochet in the corner space, make a chain 1, and cut your yarn leaving a tail of a few inches. Pull the tail through the loop on your hook to secure the stitch. You have now joined two columns together.
8. Repeat the steps above to attach the third column to the second column, and so on, until you've joined all the columns.
9. Once you've joined all the columns, repeat the process to join the rows together, but don't single crochet into the joins instead chain 3 and single crochet in the next back of loop.
10. Weave in the loose ends before working the border.

Border

After joining the granny squares work the border.

The border is made up of over two rounds with a decorative slip stitch worked around the base of round 1.

Round One

Working with two strands of red yarn and a 9 mm crochet hook and the right side of the blanket facing you.

Attach the yarn with a slip stitch into any stitch in the blanket just before a corner and make a single crochet in the same space.

Single crochet into each stitch along the edge and make 2 single crochets, chain 2 and 2 single crochets in the corner chain 2 spaces.

Abbreviated version

Round 1 - Color C (9mm hook and two strands). Ch1, sc in same space as ch1, then sc in each st around and (2sc, ch2, 2sc) in each ch2 corner space, sl st into ch1.

Round Two

Chain 2, and half double crochet into each stitch around the border and work 2 half double crochets, chain 2 and 2 half double crochets in each chain 2 corner space, slip stitch into chain 2, chain 1, cut yarn and fasten off. Weave in the tail ends.

Abbreviated version

Round 2 - Ch2, hdc in same space as ch2, hdc in each st around and (2hdc, ch2, 2hdc) in each ch2 corner space, sl st into ch1, ch1, cut yarn and fasten off. Weave in the tail ends.

Decorative slip stitch

Using a 9mm hook and 2 strands of cream yarn, slip stitch into the spaces at the base of the single crochet stitches made in round one. Fasten off.
