About These Crochet Cartoon Eyes
- This is a simple three-round pattern that uses single crochet stitches.
- The eyes are very quick to make and require very little yarn.
- You can make them in any color you like.
- This is a free crochet pattern. You can find a printable pattern card at the end of this post.
Why Make Crochet Eyes
Deciding to crochet your own eyes instead of using plastic safety eyes has some advantages!
You can make them in any size, color, or shape you want. They are safer to use on items made for little ones under three years of age.
Crocheted eyes give your project a special handmade touch, and you can use whatever yarn you have. Plus, you get to be super creative with how they look.
Crocheted eyes also fit better with your project's stitches and are usually easier on your wallet.
Where To Use Crocheted Eyes
Crocheted eyes can be used on many different items such as:
- Amigurumi stuffed animals and dolls to give them a cute and customized look.
- They are an ideal option for baby toys because they are soft and eliminate the risk of small, detachable parts that could pose a choking hazard.
- Crocheted eyes can add a unique decorative touch to items like blankets, pillows, and wall hangings.
- Crocheted eyes can be used as embellishments on hats, scarves, and other clothing accessories to create a whimsical or playful design. For example, we added red cartoon eyes to this mummy Halloween treat bag.
- Crocheted eyes are a safer alternative for pet toys since they are less likely to break apart and be ingested by pets.
Crochet Stitches
You will need to know chain stitch, single crochet and slip stitch to make these crochet eyes.

Eye Size Variations
You have the flexibility to create crochet eyes in various sizes by the following methods:
Smaller eyes
To make smaller eyes, use a light yarn weight and a smaller hook size.
Larger eyes
To make larger eyes, consider one of these methods.
- Use a heavier yarn weight and a larger hook size.
- Or, make the eyes using half double crochet (hdc) stitches instead of single crochet stitches.
Gauge
The gauge is not so important for this pattern.
But, what is important is that the crocheted eye size is suited to the project you are making.
So, experiment with different yarn weights to get an appropriate eye size to suit the item you are making them for.
