Yarn Used For This Heart Bookmark
I used 3-ply, 100% crochet cotton for these bookmarks, which is similar to #0 lace (light fingering, 10-count thread) yarn.
It is lightweight and makes delicate and fine stitches and won't make a thick or bulky bookmark.
You could also use #1 super fine and #2 fine yarns, these a slightly thicker but will still make a lightweight bookmark.
You could also use #3 light (DK, light worsted, 8-ply) yarn, but keep in mind these bookmarks will be thicker and chunkier and might not sit well between the pages.
I choose cotton yarn because it is fuzz-free, strong, and durable and it lays flat which is essential for bookmarks.
But you could also use another fiber like bamboo yarn or silk yarn and even acrylic yarn if you like the look of it.
Crochet Stitches
You will need to know a few basic crochet stitches to make this triple heart bookmark, like chain stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, treble crochet and slip stitch.
Double Crochet Stitch (dc)
- Yarn over hook (YO), insert the hook from the front to the back of a stitch.
- Yarn over hook (YO) again and pull back up through the stitch. You will have three loops on the hook.
- Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through two loops on the hook. You will now have two loops on the hook.
- Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through the two loops on the hook.
- This completes a double crochet stitch.
Treble Crochet (or Triple Crochet) (tr)
- Wrap the yarn over the hook (YO) twice, and insert the hook from the front to the back of a stitch.
- Yarn over hook (YO) again and pull back up through the stitch. You will have four loops on the hook.
- Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through two loops on the hook. You will now have three loops on the hook.
- Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through two loops on the hook. You will now have two loops on the hook.
- Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through the two loops on the hook.
- This completes a treble crochet stitch.
You will also need to know how to make a picot stitch. You can learn more about this in our special stitches section further down the page.

Picot (picot)
A picot stitch is made using chain stitches and a slip stitch. It can be used as an extension to single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, or treble stitches.
A picot is normally 3 chain stitches, but if you require more definition, make it with 4 chain stitches.
- Create three chain stitches at the point where you want to add a picot.
- Then insert your hook into the third chain from the hook.
- Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through both the stitch and the loop on the hook.
- This completes one Picot stitch.
Abbreviated version
