About This Scrunchie Pattern
- These ruffle scrunchies are so easy and quick to make and a great stash-busting project for those small bits left over from past projects.
- This is a quick project and you can easily make them in less than 10 minutes.
- If you are an absolute beginner you will need to know how to make a few basic stitches, like single crochet and double crochet stitches, and how to slip stitch. We have a break down of these stitches in our section titled Crochet stitches if you need to learn more about them.
Materials For A Ruffle Scrunchie
Yarn: To make a crochet hair scrunchie, you can use just about any yarn for these.
I particularly like the look and feel of velvet yarn because it is so light and soft.
But, use whatever yarn you have on hand. It could be worsted weight yarn, DK light worsted, or even sports weight, but adjust the number of stitches you work around the band to get good coverage.
Hook: The velvet yarn I used recommended a 6.5 mm hook, but I went down half a hook size and used a 6mm after testing the pattern because I like the finished look of the scrunchies that sized hook.
So, use an appropriate crochet hook size for the yarn you have, or use a hook size to achieve the finished look you are after.
Hair elastic: You will also need good quality elastic hair bands that don't break at the first stretch.
I used a 2-inch (5cm) elastic hair tie for each of the scrunchies on this page, but you can make these using whatever size elastic hair bands you have on hand.
Yarn needle: You will need a yarn needle to weave in the ends to finish the scrunchies.

Working a gauge for this pattern is not that important. The main thing is to ensure that you work enough stitches around the elastic band so that is fully covered.

Pattern Notes
The pattern is easy, but you may have to adjust your stitch count depending on the size of the hair elastics used.
So, feel free to increase or decrease the number of stitches worked around the band to ensure that the band is fully covered but not over-stitched.
