What Yarn To Use

You can use just about any yarn type and yarn weight to make crochet witch hat appliques.

Fine yarn weights like #1 super fine, #2 fine, and #3 light are ideal for this because the appliques will be small and not too bulky.
If you use thicker yarns the appliques will be chunkier and heavier looking.

I used #3 light (light worsted, DK, 8-ply), and 100% acrylic yarn to make these bat appliques.

Crochet Stitches

You will need to know a few basic crochet stitches like chain stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and slip stitch to make this crochet applique pattern. Find out more about these stitches below.

Double Crochet Stitch (dc)

  1. Yarn over hook (YO), insert the hook from the front to the back of a stitch.
  2. Yarn over hook (YO) again and pull back up through the stitch. You will have three loops on the hook.
  3. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through two loops on the hook. You will now have two loops on the hook.
  4. Yarn over hook (YO) pull the yarn back through the two loops on the hook.
  5. This completes a double crochet stitch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you attach crochet applique to fabric?

To attach a crochet appliqué to fabric, you will need a yarn needle and thread or yarn. Thread the needle and knot the end.

Position the crochet piece where you want it on the fabric, then sew it in place using simple stitches like whip stitch, running stitch, or blanket stitch, going around the edge of the crochet.

Then make a few back stitches on the wrong side of the fabric to secure it in place, then cut the yarn and you are done.
